Working with vaults

Lock a vault, set how long it stays open, switch between vaults, and read who opened what.

A vault is the encrypted container your assets and documents live in. It is closed by default: you unlock it with one of your vault keys, work inside it, and it closes again. While it is open the key that opens it exists only in your browser's memory, which is why reloading the page closes it.

Locking a vault

Locking is immediate and takes effect for you as well. Nothing in the vault is readable again until you unlock it with a key.

Locking a vault by hand (0:16)

Click Lock Vault in the vault header whenever you are stepping away from a shared or public machine. You do not need to lock before signing out.

Auto-lock

Every vault also closes itself after a period of inactivity, whether or not you remember to.

Changing the auto-lock timeout (0:21)

Open the vault and click Manage Vault.

Under Security Settings, drag the Auto-Lock Timeout slider. It runs from 1 minute to 60 minutes.

Click Save Settings.

A long timeout is convenient and less safe. On a laptop you carry around, short is better.

Switching between vaults

You can keep more than one vault, for example a personal one and a business one. Each has its own keys and its own contents, and unlocking one does not unlock the other.

Moving from one vault to another (0:24)

Use the vault selector in the header. Choosing a different vault returns you to the vault list rather than opening the new one directly, so you unlock the target vault from there.

Reading the audit log

Every vault records what happened to it: unlocks, assets added or changed, keys registered or removed, access granted to other people.

Reading a vault's activity history (0:23)

The log is append-only. It is the record you would rely on if you ever needed to show who touched the estate and when.
